SATELLITE SESSION OBJECTIVES
Global health programs face significant fiscal challenges related to scarce resources, competing priorities and country commitments for global public health activities. The application of effective economic tools may be very useful in determining the most efficient allocation of resources and understanding the economic impact of public health interventions. The ability of health programs to demonstrate economic “spillovers” on other sectors including global health security, diplomacy, and trade is crucial for policy-makers and funding agencies. Future program sustainability requires that low and middle income countries be able to quantify economic returns in order to create the fiscal space for health programs in their limited budgets – both for infectious and non-communicable diseases. Scale-up of ongoing programs will depend on the comparative appraisal of marginal costs and benefits of additional investments. Emergency funding in the early phases of major disasters and pandemics also requires the application of economic tools to estimate the impact of delayed or absent intervention.

This satellite session will highlight some of these economic issues and discuss “best practices” and approaches for making the economic case for global health.
