INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE​​
The Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) invites all persons wishing to report original research, innovative projects or novel programs related to global health to submit abstracts to be considered for presentation.​​

All abstract presentations will be made in either poster or oral formats. Abstract authors are asked to indicate a preference for TRADITIONAL POSTER versus ELECTRONIC POSTER versus ORAL PRESENTATION but conference organizers will assign the final format.

IMPORTANT: Download and review the FAQs Sheet to determine the correct pathway for your abstract (Scientific Abstract v. Program & Project Abstract v. Global Health Education Abstract), and for the required information for each abstract type. Abstracts that are submitted to the wrong pathway, or that do not include the required information, risk lower review scores and higher probability of being rejected for presentation.

ABSTRACT PRESENTATIONS: ORAL PRESENTATIONS v. TRADITIONAL PAPER POSTERS v. ELECTRONIC POSTERS
At its 2018 conference in New York City CUGH introduced electronic Posters (ePosters) to its program. This option will continue to be available at the 2019 conference - in addition to the Traditional Poster format (paper). ePoster Presenters may be asked to orally present their ePoster on March 8 or March 9, 2019.

Oral Abstract Presentations at CUGH2016 in San Francisco, CA | Oral presentation sessions are organized by track. Over a 1.5 hour period, each presenter is provided up to 12 minutes to make a powerpoint presentation followed by moderated Q&A. Oral abstract presentations are only viewable in their assigned room and time.
Traditional Paper Posters at CUGH2017 in Washington, DC | Presenters bring in, carry out. Presentation material is limited to what will fit on the layout (about 40" w x 40" h). One-hour presentation periods are conducive to discussions with multiple interested persons, and supports one-on-one conversations of greater scope and depth.
Electronic Posters at CUGH2018 in New York City | ePosters are web-based, allowing for text, graphics, links to video and other websites. Abstract authors pre-load the ePosters before arrival. If invited to present, presentation time is pre-scheduled and shorter than the 1-hour period allowed for Paper Poster Presentations.

NEW PATHWAY & ORAL ABSTRACT SESSIONS

  • 50 ORAL ABSTRACT PRESENTATIONS IN 2019
    The 2019 agenda will include space for 50 oral abstract presentations, grouped into 10 oral abstract sessions. These 10 sessions comprise of:
    • One session for each of seven tracks
    • One session highlighting the work of Young Scholars (top scoring abstract presentations by global health scholars and faculty who are under 35 years of age)
    • One session highlighting the work of researchers from low-and-middle-income countries
    • One session dedicated to oral abstracts in the Education Pathway. 


  • NEW PATHWAY - GLOBAL HEALTH EDUCATION
    In addition to the Scientific and Programs/Projects abstract pathways, this is the second year that we are offering an EDUCATION PATHWAY.  The EDUCATION PATHWAY is intended for abstracts relating to:

    • Instructional Methodology
    • Curriculum and Course Design
    • Assessment/Evaluation of Educational Programs
    • Experiential Learning in Global Health
    • Administrative Issues related to education, including working with university administration and international partners
    • Art and Science of Teaching and Learning
    • Community/Public Education
    • Education in Health Policy or Ethics
    • Global Health Education Research

      The EDUCATION PATHWAY is not appropriate for abstracts relating to medical or clinical research of which education is only a component of the overall project (use the SCIENTIFIC PATHWAY) or abstracts relating to global health programs or projects for which  education is only a component of the program or project (use the PROGRAMS AND PROJECTS PATHWAY).  

      Abstracts should only be submitted for the educational pathway for programs or projects that have been implemented and evaluated in some way.  
7 GLOBAL HEALTH TRACKS
To help ensure that this conference has an impact CUGH hopes this event will attract some of the best and brightest ideas on how to address some of the pressing global health challenges we face.

We seek abstracts outlining programs, initiatives, case studies, research and solutions that are scalable, impactful, context relevant and affordable. Please bring your best ideas to CUGH2019.

Abstracts in all areas of global health are welcome and collected through 7 tracks

  • Governance, Human Rights, Ethics, Global Health Law, Violence, and Migration
  • Human Resources, Healht Systems, Strengthening Public Institutions, Global Health Economics
  • Non-Communicable Diseases & Communicable Diseases
  • Planetary Health, One Health, Environmental Health, Climate Change
  • Social Determinants of Health
  • Translational and Implementation Science
  • What Works/What Doesn't Work: Examples of High Impact Development/Global Health/Environmental Programs

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
The maximum word count for abstract submissions is 350 words. Supplemental materials (photos, articles or reports) are not accepted and will not be seen by the program review committee.

The submitting author will receive an email message confirming the receipt of the abstract.
  • Abstracts must be entered within one of  three pathways: Scientific; Project/Programmatic; Education.
  • Abstracts may be submitted for Oral or Poster presentations [POSTER, OR EPOSTER].
    Authors may indicate a preference but all decisions will be made by the scientific planning committee whose determination is final.
  • To be selected for Oral Presentation, abstract content must not have been previously published as an abstract, paper or manuscript. For Poster Presentations, previously published material is discouraged, but qualify for consideration.
  • It is the responsibility of the submitting party to accurately indicate whether the abstract has been previously published by any of its authors as either an abstract or a manuscript.
  • It is the responsibility of the submitting party to accurately indicate whether permission is granted by all authors to publish the abstract if selected for presentation.
  • Where hopeful presenters have submitted multiple abstracts, conference organizers will make all efforts to ensure that presenters are not invited to present more than one abstract.
  • All abstracts must be submitted in English.
  • Abstracts must be submitted online.
  • Abstracts' maximum word count is 350 words.
  • Abstract titles are allowed up to 250 characters (including spaces) and should NOT be all caps
  • All abstracts must be structured to fit within the provided fields
  • Marketing pitches will not be accepted

All abstract presenters must register online and pay the registration fee .
ABSTRACT REVIEW CRITERIA
All abstracts that follow submissions guidelines will be reviewed and selected by the scientific planning committee.
Notifications will be emailed only to the contact person who submitted the abstract submission.
Presentation formats (oral or poster) will be assigned to accepted abstracts by the scientific planning committee. All decisions are final.
Proposals constituting sales pitches for products or services will not be considered.

In judging the abstract submissions, the review committee will consider the following:

Scientific Pathway & Programmatic Pathway Abstracts
  1. Innovation: the degree of innovation exhibited in the abstract (whether in the topic matter, methods, or perspective, etc.)
  2. Solutions: how relevant, interpretable, scalable and impactful the solution is
  3. Impact: the potential impact the described project might have on global health challenges
  4. Organization & Clarity: the organization and clarity of the written abstract

Education Pathway Abstracts
  1. Relevance to Pre-existing Work in the Field of Education: the degree to which the initiative thoughtfully builds on existing educational pedagogical methods/programs/initiatives.
  2. Innovation: the degree of innovation project
  3. Scalability & Internalization: how scalable and relevant are the solutions proposed.
  4. Impact: how impactful is the proposal?
  5. Organization & Clarity: The organization and clarity of the written abstract​​​
STUDENT POSTER COMPETITION
The Lancet/CUGH will award seven $500 awards to seven student poster presentations - one for the best of each track. Students who wish to compete must opt in on the abstract submission form to compete.

Student Poster Review Procedure and Guidelines:

Competition is open to abstracts addressing a project or activity conducted by an individual(s) with student status during the project period. The project, program, activity to be presented must be completed by July 31, 2018.

Judges will consider abstracts that meet all the following requirements:
  • Authors/Presenters are students, or were students during the project period in question
  • Authors/Presenters have accepted the invitation to present in poster format (regardless of the preferred presentation method indicated in the submission form)
  • Submissions adhere to all abstract guideline stated above
  • Opted in to compete in the Abstract Submission form

Poster Judging:
  • The top scoring abstracts of each track will be invited to present as posters on March 8 and 9, 2019
  • Judges will view these posters and select one winning poster per track
  • Poster winners will be selected by end of day March 8, when the winners will be notified via email
  • Poster winners will be recognized at the CUGH Awards Ceremony on March 9, where they will each receive $500 from
    The Lancet Global Health, and a photo opportunity with leadership from The Lancet and CUGH.​​
LMIC & YOUNG SCIENTIST/FACULTY ORAL ABSTRACT PRESENTATIONS
To increase the opportunities for young global health faculty, practitioners and students/trainees, as well as researchers and scholars from LMICs, to obtain an oral presentation slot, conference organizers will reserve 10 additional oral presentation slots to feature their work.

To qualify for consideration in the LMIC Session, the presenter must be:
  • A citizen of a LMIC
  • Currently working and living in a LMIC, and will continue to do so through March 10, 2019

To qualify for consideration in the Young Scientist Session, the presenter must:
  • Be under 35 years of age on March 10, 2019, and
  • Select “oral presentation” as the preferred presentation method, and
  • Opt in to be considered for this opportunity
  • Young Presenters from low- and lower middle-income countries are encouraged to participate
TRAVEL BURSARIES FOR LLMIC PRESENTERS
A limited number of bursary packages will be presented to selected abstract presenters from Low Income Countries (LIC) and Lower Middle Income Countries (LMIC). Bursary recipients may be assigned to present in any of the three formats: Oral Presentation, Poster Presentation, ePoster Presentation.

The Bursary Package includes:
  • One waived registration for the CUGH 2019 Conference in Chicago, IL in March 2019
  • Up to 4 complimentary nights at the 2019 conference site, Hilton Chicago Hotel, during the conference period.
  • $500 to support the presenter's travel cost

To qualify for consideration, the abstract presenter must:
  • Be a citizen of a low income country (LIC) or lower middle income country (LMIC) who is currently working and living in a LIC, or LMIC and will continue to do so through December 31, 2019.
  • CUGH uses the World Bank definition of LIC and LMIC:

  • Submit an abstract for oral or poster Presentation by the listed deadline where s/he is listed as the lead presenter.
